Nissan has announced a £1billion plan to build electric cars in the UK.
The Japanese car giant unveiled a major investment in its Sunderland plant in a move that will create 6,200 jobs.The announcement is a dramatic change in fortunes for the factory which, before a Brexit deal was struck, had faced questions over its future.
Instead, Nissan has picked Sunderland as the site to make a new electric “cross-over” car that will be exported to the EU.
Sunderland is Britain’s biggest car plant, employing around 6,000 workers and supporting up to 24,000 in the supply chain.
